 Letter from RiverLink
Executive Director
Karen Cragnolin
Happy April, RiverLovers!
I remember the first Earth Day celebration in 1970. I
was in college and to be truthful, it was mostly about a fun
weekend with many parties.
Alot has changed since that first Earth Day. Not only has it
morphed into "Earth Month," but now everyone is involved. It is still a
celebration of spring and renewal, but it is also observed and
celebrated by businesses and families all across the country. T.S.
Elliot had it all wrong -- April isn't the cruelest month! We
hope you will join us for our Earth Day celebration at Carrier Park.
We'll have hot air balloon rides, a plant swap, nature walks, food
from Earth Fare with nutrition and cooking demonstrations, a
children's bike parade and more. At noon, I'm leading a "Greenway Walk
and Talk" to bring you up to date on what's happening with the river
greenway project. Please plan on joining us to celebrate Mother Nature
and the earth. For more information visit our Web site.
I hope you crossed the Smokey Park Bridge and noticed that the
"Big Blues" are gone - buildings that is! Click here to see the
video of the demolition. I have watched it 50 times and I am still
cheering! Many thanks to Sean Pace and all the volunteers from the
Flood and Pump galleries at the Phil Mechanic Buildings for all their
help recycling some of the materials from these buildings into artist
studios. Many thanks also to Wyatt and Bowman Waste Management for
allowing use of their dumpsters for over 2 years and hauling off the
materials that could not be recycled. We are especially grateful to the
Asheville Merchants Foundation for funding the demolition. We are always
excited to work with D.H. Griffin Salvage (they helped us recycle the
100,000 tons of concrete at the old EDACO junkyard on Amboy Road - now
Karen Cragnolin Park). With their help we were able to recycle
about 75 percent of the 26,000 square foot "Big Blues"
- Habitat for Humanity, the WNC Green Building Council and
others all helped us recycle and reuse. And the best part is now
you can see the river. Well, no ... the best part is all the
people, funders and businesses that came together to help us. Watch this
space! More good things are coming! We are partnering
with Liberty Bikes for Pedal Link, a project aimed at connecting Carrier
Park with the Buncombe County Sports Park in Candler. Long-time bicycle
advocates Claudia and Mike Nix are leading the pack along with the Blue
Ridge Bike Club and Asheville Bicycle Racing Club. Sign up, and
through Sept. 30, they will each add a penny for every mile you pedal
and all funds will be used to add property onto the Hominy Creek
Greenway - so click here to sign up and for all the information. |

The Fins & Gills Classic is Saturday, May 8 at the Asheville Outdoor Center
The
2010 Fins & Gills Classic is a special event we really want to make
everyone in the RiverLink family aware of -- especially the families in
our RiverLink family. The Asheville Outdoor Center and Asheville Clear
Channel are sponsors, and all proceeds flow to RiverLink. While it is partly a fishing tournament, there's more to it than that. From
11 a.m. to 3 p.m., the Asheville Outdoor Center will offer a variety of
activities for the whole family, including kayak and raft rides, live
music, volleyball, gem mining, fishing classes, a casting contest, a
playground and horse shoes. There will be hot dogs, chips and drinks
available for lunch.
As for the fishing tournament, participants will
check in, complete liability forms and watch a quick safety video at the
Asheville Outdoor Center starting at 7 a.m. Watercraft will be
available for rent from the Asheville Outdoor Center, but you are
invited to bring your own. A shuttle will take fisherfolk and their
watercraft to the put-in point at Bent Creek Park. So that we are
not relocating fish, there will be three stations for weighing fish as
we float downstream, and one at the takeout at the Asheville Outdoor
Center. Prizes will be awarded for the biggest stringer, biggest fish
and other categories. All entry fees will go to RiverLink. For those 13
and older, entry fee is $10; for kids under 12, $5. Boat rental is $10
per person or $20 for a canoe. Please call Dave Russell
(252-8474, ext. 118) at RiverLink if you have any questions. Otherwise,
we hope to see you at the Asheville Outdoor Center on Saturday, May 8,
starting at 11 a.m. It's a fun day and it's for a good cause. Come join
in the fun!

Whitewater paddlin' and River cleanin' ... and a music festival, too!
Each May lovers of rivers and music gather on the banks of the French Broad River to enjoy the French Broad River Festival.
The festival gives back to the community by raising funds for the river
stewardship work of American Whitewater and various local charities,
including RiverLink. This year, on Friday April 30th, 2010 (the first
day of the festival) we will be doing a river cleanup on the French
Broad River. Participants in the cleanup will meet at
NOC's French Broad outpost on Friday, April 30, at 10 a.m. NOC will
be providing a free shuttle service and lunch for those participating
in the cleanup. The cleanup is open to the public, with no whitewater
experience required. Those who choose to paddle their own craft in the
cleanup should be comfortable in Class III-IV whitewater. Paddlers with
their own equipment and rafters are encouraged to participate.
To register, please contact AW at
info@americanwhitewater.org or 1-866-262-8429 to reserve your spot on
this trip. RSVPs must be received before April 23, 2010. |
The Hands of Hope concert really rocked!
The March 21 Billy Jonas concert at the
Orange Peel, sponsored by Hands of Hope, was a sellout success. A
great, loud time was had by all, and RiverLink was the fortunate
recipient of a portion of the proceeds.
The photo on the right shows RiverLink's Dave
Russell accepting a check from Morgan Hunneke while double-platinum
sponsor Ira Starr looks on. Starr is a registered financial consultant
with Starr and Associates of Asheville. RiverLink thanks Starr and all the other stars involved in this stellar event. |

Is this a sea-change in U.S. national transportation policy?
The United States Department of Transportation issued a
Policy Statement on Bicycle and Pedestrian Accommodation Regulations
and Recommendations paper signed on March 11, 2010 and announced March
15, 2010. Here's the link: http://www.fhwa.dot.gov/environment/bikeped/policy_accom.htm to the article, which reaches these conclusions:
Increased commitment to and investment in bicycle
facilities and walking networks can help meet goals for cleaner,
healthier air; less congested roadways; and more livable, safe,
cost-efficient communities. Walking and bicycling provide low-cost
mobility options that place fewer demands on local roads and highways.
DOT recognizes that safe and convenient walking and bicycling facilities
may look different depending on the context - appropriate facilities in
a rural community may be different from a dense, urban area. However,
regardless of regional, climate, and population density differences, it
is important that pedestrian and bicycle facilities be integrated into
transportation systems. While DOT leads the effort to provide safe and
convenient accommodations for pedestrians and bicyclists, success will
ultimately depend on transportation agencies across the country
embracing and implementing this policy. |
WWC grad rows Atlantic solo
for clean water
RiverLink
issues a big "WAY TA GO!" to Katie Spotz, a Warren Wilson College
graduate who completed a solo journey across the Atlantic Ocean. The
22-year-old set sail from Dakar, Senegal, on Jan. 3 and touched land
2,817-miles later when she landed in Guyana on March 14. Spotz, a native
of Mentor, Ohio, rowed to raise money and awareness for the Blue Planet Run Foundation,
a nonprofit whose goal is to bring clean drinking water to the
estimated 1 billion people worldwide who lack it. In doing so, she
became the youngest person to ever row across the Atlantic.
Spotz rowed up to 10 hours a day, taking breaks for naps, navigation
and boat maintenance. At night, she drifted aboard her
specially-designed 19-foot ocean row boat equipped with solar panels for
power, a satellite phone and a laptop computer. "The hardest part was
just the solo part," said Spotz, who said she struggled with boredom and
had trouble sleeping inside the cramped, 19-foot row boat.
RiverLink
has extended an invitation to Spotz to come chat with us if she ever
returns to Western North Carolina. She may be returning to WWC to give a
talk this fall, and promises to keep us posted. | |
