Volunteer Spotlight shines on Mark Vanderhoff!
Mark Vanderhoff has been a dedicated RiverLink volunteer since 2005 where he began as an education volunteer going to local schools to teach students about watersheds and leading Kids in the Creek programs. He has joined Hartwell Carson, RiverLink's French Broad Riverkeeper, on several of the annual river paddle trips including the Paddlin' the Pigeon in spring of 2008 and Paddlin' the Nolichucky River in spring of 2009 as pictured above during a rafting trip. When asked why he started volunteering with RiverLink, Mark says, "I love spending time outside, and RiverLink speaks to that interest with its work creating parks, protecting the region's streams and rivers, and cleaning up litter." Mark and his wife Sheila moved to Asheville in 2005 from Reno, Nevada to be closer to their families who live in Kentucky and to enjoy a great mountain town like Reno. Mark worked as a newspaper reporter in his 20's and has recently returned to the newspaper industry as a reporter at the Black Mountain News. He also sells real estate and is a freelance writer. When not volunteering with RiverLink, Mark enjoys reading and anything outside from hiking, biking and canoeing, to strolling around the neighborhood or taking his daughter to local parks. Thank you Mark! The next Volunteer Spotlight could be on you! To learn more about volunteering with RiverLink, please come to our Volunteer Information Sessions the 2nd Wed of each month at 10am and 5pm at our offices. Please contact Rachel Doebber, the Volunteer Outreach Coordinator, at volunteer@riverlink.org or 828-2852-8474 ext. 118 to RSVP for the information session. | |

River Fact
A large variety of wildlife, especially birds, can be seen along the French Broad River, the most notable being the wading birds. Great blue herons are numerous, and green (Butorides virescens) and little blue herons (Florida caerulea) appear as well. Egrets, which make their way inland after nesting in Coastal Plain habitats hundreds of miles to the southeast, are a special treat in the mountains. These magnificent white birds can be seen searching for fish and crustaceans along the banks of the French Broad's quiet waters.

Tess Handy Evergreen Charter School 8th Grade Earth Day Poetry Contest Honorable Mention Standing here still as a tree Listening to the river take over me Pool of water glistens out Earth's hands hold awaiting drought And Reaching up to the heavens for tea...is me Standing here still as a tree Listening to the river take over me Beads of sweat cover my skin My feet are cut and bruised from within My bones ache I feel alone Distant from the world That we call our own I will never go back, I promise myself For this bluff has been destroying me from the first day out Standing here still as a tree Listening to the river take over me There is not beginning, nor is there an end Life thrives, but we won't from within We stand around like life is a frown Among our friends and family broken down Standing here still as a tree Listening to the river take over me Fresh stem of a dandelion awaits its seed Birds hop about, gathering weeds Ready for spring and the life that it holds The clouds pull back and unfold They show me and teach me To open my eyes and relax Because summer is coming And there is no going back
