PLEASE NOTE THAT A CHALLENGE GRANT - JUST ANNOUNCED - WILL MATCH EACH DOLLAR YOU GIVE BEFORE JUNE 30TH.  PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF YOU CAN HELP

Dear Friend of RiverLink:

I'm sure you are getting many requests for donations to support non-profits, but none is more worthy than RiverLink. Yes, I'm "preaching to the choir"!  You have been a faithful donor to RiverLink and believe in its mission. So I won't dwell on the preaching. Suffice it to say that keeping our current level of services and capable staff is dependent on the success of the 2009 Annual Fund drive that ends June 30, 2009, and we need an additional $45,000 by that time.

So if you can, dig a bit deeper this year - as I have already done. Tough times require that we prioritize. So I am focusing on a few of our most effective and efficient non-profit agencies in what I am able to give (RiverLink returns about $10 to the community in projects for each $1 invested--not a bad multiplier!). And, I think you know RiverLink receives no government funds for its operations, depending on individual donors. I hope you will see fit to increase your pledge or donation this year.

You may execute your donation in several ways:
1) send a check to P.O. Box 15488, Asheville, NC 28813-0488 (If you will reply to this by clicking here, I can have the office send you a package with giving envelopes).

2) donate by credit card (Visa and Master Card) by visiting our secure Web site www.riverlink.org or by calling your donation in to 252-8474. If you prefer, you may ask for Karen Cragnolin on Ext. 110

3) by installment (e.g., friends may join the RiverLink Yacht Club for $19.87/month producing $238.44). Carrie Allen in the RiverLink office can arrange a monthly gift or pledge in the amount you choose, payable by June 30th, which can be modified in amount for the coming year.

In coming days and weeks I will be making phone contact with those I have agreed to speak to as part of the Annual Fund, but will ask staff to help monitor daily donations.  If you have questions or require any help with your donation, please let me know.

 Paddlin the Nolichucky

May 23rd - June 6th

Nolichucky raft tripFrench Broad Riverkeeper Hartwell Carson and Riverkeeper Assistant Palmyra Romeo raft the Nolichucky River.

Paddlin the Nolichucky is a two week monitoring, education, and outreach trip. The trip started at Riverside Park on the North Toe River in Spruce Pine, NC and will finish at the mouth of French Broad River 140 miles down stream.  This trip is designed to monitor the water quality of the river, but to also educate the public about the challenges facing the river and highlight the river as a world class recreation destination.  The trip has featured a variety of activities for the public to join in the fun including RiverFests, camping trips, film festival, rain barrel building workshop and more. The trip concludes with a wildlife and bird tour this coming Saturday with more details below.

June 6th - 8am - Rankin Bottoms Wildlife and Bird Tour.  Spaces still available - sign up today!
The French Broad and the Nolichucky River come together to form Douglas Lake, and Rankin Bottoms is a skinny peninsula that sticks its nose right into the middle of things. It is the best example of river bottomland in East Tennessee. Fish get trapped here, and waders, ospreys and eagles have a fine old time. It is one of the best birding areas in the state. Join a naturalist for a guided tour of this beautiful wildlife habitat. Click here to RSVP to sign up.  Click here for directions.

Volunteer Spotlight shines on Jack Saye!

Jack Saye
Jack Saye conducting RiverLink bus tour.

Jack Saye has been a faithful RiverLink volunteer since June 2002 where he has helped us with everything from river cleanups to posting event posters around town to staffing our information booth at festivals and conducting our Riverfront bus tours.  He even calls us up and asks if we need any help spur of the moment.  When asked why he started volunteering with RiverLink, Jack says, "I liked the variety of volunteer activities - some indoor and some outdoor, heavy manual labor, like the river clean-ups, the river fest, etc.  I also liked the small number of staff and the resulting high level of contact."

Jack and his wife Linda moved to Asheville in 2001 from Ft. Hood, Texas which is an Army base located in the town of Killeen, Texas about an hour north of Austin.  They moved Jack's 86 year old mother to Asheville in 2003 to be with them.  Jack has his Masters of Science in Nursing and spent 26 of his 30 years of nursing on active duty in the Army.  He retired from the Army as a full colonel.  When not volunteering with RiverLink, Jack enjoys kayaking on the French Broad River, hiking on the many trails in the WNC area, reading and walking with Linda and other members of the Asheville Amblers, an American Volkssport organization.

Thank you Jack!

The next Volunteer Spotlight could be on you!  To learn more about volunteering with RiverLink, please come to our Volunteer Information Sessions the 2nd Wed of each month at 10am and 5pm at our offices.  Please contact Rachel Doebber, the Volunteer Outreach Coordinator, at volunteer@riverlink.org or 828-2852-8474 ext. 118 to RSVP for the information session.
Palmyra on Paddlin' Nolichucky Trip
Palmyra on the Nolichucky Raft trip.

If you worked with RiverLink this past year you probably met Palmyra Romeo.  She is one of our incredible AmeriCorps Members. Palmyra was valedictorian of her class at NC State and has spend the last several months working at RiverLink as our Assistant Riverkeeper.

Last week as a result of a sever sinus infection and constant debilitating headaches, Palmyra was admitted to the hospital.  This past Saturday after numerous tests including MRI's and a brain scan she had surgery to drain an abscess on her brain.  She is still in the intensive care unit at the Medical College of Georgia.

We hope that you will join the RiverLink family in sending your prayers, thoughts and good wishes to Palmyra and her family.   If you have cards or other items you would like to send to Palmyra to wish her a speedy recovery, please send them to us and we will arrange to get them to her.

As with the other AmeriCorps volunteers RiverLink has been privileged worked with over the years, Palmyra exemplifies the very best of the next generation of river and earth stewards.  She is smart, resourceful, fun, talented and doing all the things needed to help educate and lead the next generation of decision makers.

Cards and other items for Palmyra can be mailed to:

River Fact

The French Broad River has several characteristics that are unusual for rivers of the southern Appalachians. Due to the nature of southeastern Blue Ridge topography, the river flows in a northward semicircle, cradled between the Tennessee Valley Divide and the Pisgah Ridge. Beginning at the junction of its first three major tributaries, the North, West, and East forks, the river flows first to the northeast, then turns north to Asheville, and finally sweeps to the northwest toward Tennessee.

Gray dawn
the cold, bleak clouds lie low over the river
Only the lapping of the water against the rocks breaks the silence.
The water rushes over boulders obscured by moss.

Out of the fog, a dark shape looms
only a broken tree, a sentinel of the waters.
Then suddenly, a flicker of silvery white
A fish or just the crest of a wave?

The river flows on,
Small beams of sunlight split the clouds
in the light the water becomes clear.
The dull rocks reach up, grabbing at the surface.

What else lies hidden in the cold water?
Another silvery flash,
the sun on a glistening rock.
The day becomes lighter
but clouds still brush the gurgling water.

The river flows on.
The clouds melt away, like warm butter.
Trees rustle in the warming breeze.
They seem to be waking, preparing for spring.
The bank becomes rocky, the water faster.
Mountains rise above the water, growing in place of the fog.
The sun climbs into the sky,
its beams kissing the cold water.
Light glitters on the waves.

The river flows on.
Flashes of silver in the green water.
Something is slipping through the shadows.
The warm rocks glitter, looking soft in the light.
A gleaming flash of red and silver ripples through the water.
A fish comes from the ocean,
gliding upstream.
The river flows on.
