RiverLink Newsletter ~ August 2007 ©2007 RiverLink.org
RiverLink is a regional non-profit spearheading the economic and environmental revitalization of the French Broad River and its tributaries as a place to work, live and play. Since 1987 we have engaged in simultaneous efforts to address water quality concerns throughout the French Broad River basin, expand public opportunities for access and recreation, and spearheaded the economic revitalization of Asheville's dilapidated riverfront district. We hope you find this newsletter informative and enjoyable. To unsubscribe please click here

Rockin' River Fest is just around the corner, and this year we have TONS of fun in store! From the Raft Race and Battle of the Bands to the Kid's Bike Parade and Boating Demos, there is something for everyone to enjoy!

Sign up to volunteer!
11:00   Kid's Bike Parade

All that is needed to join the parade around the bike paths at French Broad River Park is a bicycle or any non-motorized child carrier with wheels. Prizes will be awarded for Best Dressed Bike, Pirate Ship Bike, People's Choice Bike, and Youngest Biker. Bikers will meet at the Kid's Area and must be accompanied by an adult.

12:00   Raft Race

Get your inner tube out of the garage or your "YACHT" out of the dock to advertise your company, your cause, and your creativity in the Rockin' River Raft Race! Entry is FREE, and everyone is encouraged to get on the river! If you don't have a boat you can build one or rent one from a local outfitter. Non-profits are eligible to win free advertising time with 96.5 WOXL, worth $1,000-5,000! You will automatically win just for entering a raft in the race!

River Fact
of the month

Rain gardens are a great way to prevent polluted stormwater runoff from entering our streams and rivers.  Learn how to build your own!

What is a Rain Garden?

A rain garden is an attractive garden with a special purpose; to reduce the amount of stormwater pollution from entering our streams and rivers.

A rain garden is constructed as a place to direct the rain from your roof or driveway, and is landscaped with perennial plant species native to our region. Rain gardens have loose, absorbent soils; a shallow, bowl-shaped ponding area; and are made to resemble the function of a natural meadow or light forest ecosystem.

Why a Rain Garden?

A rain garden is a natural way for you to help solve our stormwater pollution problems, help recharge groundwater, and protect our water resources. A rain garden keeps rain on your property, where it naturally belongs. By creating a rain garden, you can help improve water quality in local streams, rivers, and lakes. You can use rain the way nature intended, instead of throwing this resource away.

In addition, rain gardens are attractive landscaping features. They use North Carolina's native species of plants that are adapted to our region, and can be low maintenance while providing habitat for native wildlife and butterflies.

River Quote
of the month
"One common measure of the cleanliness of a mountain stream is to look for trout. If you find the trout, the habitat is healthy. It's the same way with children in a city. Children are a kind of indicator species. If we can build a successful city for children, we will have a successful city for all people."

Enrique Peñalosa, "The Politics of Happiness"
