RiverLink Announces RiverWise Award Winners for 2006

RiverLink is proud to honor and announce the 2006 RiverWise Award winners. RiverLink chose these projects for exhibiting outstanding achievements and efforts to protect the land and water quality in our community. According to the NC Public Interest Research Group (NCPIRG), the French Broad River watershed is the fastest growing area in the state of North Carolina. With this fact in mind, the RiverLink Board of Directors and staff decided to recognize individuals, institutions, and private for-profit developments that celebrate and protect the wonderful watershed we call home.

SouthWings French Broad watershed flight

In January RiverLink's French Broad Riverkeeper Hartwell Carson and executive director Karen Cragnolin had the unique opportunity to fly over the French Broad River watershed.

They got a "bird's eye" view of the land uses from Transylvania County to the Tennessee line.  No one has to tell you when you enter and leave Buncombe County from the air the land use changes are so dramatic. Buncombe County, particularly in the south end of the county is bursting with new development.

In The French Broad Wilma Dykeman talks about the micro-climates and they are clearly visible from the air as well - especially after a freeze. The Riverkeeper is planning on taking more flights through the watershed, especially after a heavy rain to view where the sediment runoff problems are originating.

These trips are compliments of SouthWings, a non-profit whose mission is to helps other environmental non-profits obtain information and "bird's eye" views of the land that would otherwise are impossible or difficult to obtain.

River Cleanups

Saturday was a beautiful winter day to spend outdoors- and what better way to spend it than cleaning up our rivers! Biltmore Lake Association Adopt-a-Stream Team Stream chose a sunny January day to clean their adopted sections of Hominy Creek, a tributary of the French Broad River.

Fourteen volunteers from the Biltmore Lake Association, along with RiverLink Volunteer Coordinator Kathryn Blau and French Broad Riverkeeper Hartwell Carson collected over thirty bags of trash and 51 tires. The Biltmore Lake Association adopted a section of Hominy Creek near their neighborhood on Sand Hill Road in Candler.

RiverLink's Adopt-a-Stream program invites interested volunteer groups- schools, churches, community organizations, businesses, neighborhoods- to adopt a section of stream or river in the French Broad River watershed! Stream teams conduct a minimum of two cleanups a year plus one visual monitoring session to assess the health of your adopted stream or river. After one cleanup a sign with the stream team name will be installed at the adopted site. This is a great volunteer program for any age group!

For an information packet and application, please contact the Volunteer Coordinator at volunteer@riverlink.org or 828-252-8474 ext. 118.

River Quote
of the month
"Water is a living thing; it is life itself. In it life began. And everything that lives in water requires oxygen. It is also a moving thing. A burden bearer, water can carry off great loads of humanity's- but here the struggle between life and death begins. For it can only carry so much, and as the oxygen in water is used up by waste, organic or inorganic, the living creatures in water begin to die... Not only the life in the river suffers; there is all the life along it, including man himself."

The French Broad by Wilma Dykeman (1955)
