Karen
Cragnolin recognized for 20 years with RiverLink
RiverLink Executive Director Karen Cragnolin
was recognized for her 20 years of work with the organization at the
June 16th Open House at
EDACO.
RiverLink board members unveiled a sign
that marks the former EDACO site 'Future Karen Cragnolin Park.' The site for the park is
located between Carrier
Park and
French Broad
River Park on Amboy road. Currently, the
land is in the Brownfields program and is being assessed for
contamination from the former auto salvage
yard.
RiverLink's Annual Fund chair Patsy Keever said, "As
a Buncombe County Commissioner, I worked with and admired Karen's
passion and effectiveness in keeping the river in the public's eye.
Inter-City visits by the Chamber always included a river destination
and Karen to give and receive input on river development. She is a
treasure to this community and it is thrilling to see the river plan
progressing."
She
also received the Old North State Award from Gov. Mike Easley's
office. The award recognizes people who have had a significant
influence in North Carolina.
Congratulations,
Karen, Thank you for two wonderful
decades!!!

RiverLink
featured in Southern Living
magazine
Pick up a copy of the July Southern
Living magazine, and
look for a story titled, "Beyond the Water's Edge: The scope of one
nonprofit organization stretches beyond the banks of the river its'
saving."
The
story features many of the projects RiverLink has been involved in
the last 20 years. It also goes beyond discussing the aesthetic
appeal of RiverLink's accomplishments and talks about the benefits
parks give to the community. Also discussed are the challenges of
economic development and environmental protection.
"Growth
and development are inevitable," said Karen Cragnolin, RiverLink
executive director. "The area is going to continue to grow and we
have to keep coming up with ways to preserve the river" (Carolina
Living section, page 5).

More than 150 guests celebrated the French
Broad River at RiverLink's Yacht Club Soiree earlier this month in
downtown Asheville's Windows on the Park.
The soiree featured two local bands-Johnny's
Inhaler and Commonfolk. Yacht club guests, dressed in their
finest 'yacht club attire,' helped themselves to first-class food
and drinks while listening to live music and helping to raise money
for the revitalization of the river.
Over $3,500 was raised to help RiverLink
achieve its mission of revitalizing the French BroadRiver
watershed.
Special
thanks to our sponsors: the
Asheville Affiliates, Artful Shelter, Top Floor Studio, 828 Design,
Catawba Valley Brewing Company, Asheville.com, Colorful Palate
Catering, Greenlife Grocery, Image Smith, Imaging Technologies, Jen

River
Cleanups: Heavy lifting volunteers needed
We have a long list of sites on the
rivers that have trash that cannot be retrieved by hand. A volunteer
has a truck with a winch that we will be using this fall to get some
of these heavier items- we need strong volunteers capable of
physically demanding work to help
out.

River Fact of the
month
|
|
Want to help clean up
the French Broad? Follow these tips on how to prevent
non-point source pollution from your
home.
. Keep litter, pet wastes, leaves, and debris out of
street gutters and storm drains--these outlets drain directly
to lake, streams, rivers, and wetlands.
. Apply lawn
and garden chemicals sparingly and according to
directions.
. Dispose of used oil, antifreeze, paints,
and other household chemicals properly, not in storm sewers or
drains.
.
Clean up spilled brake fluid, oil, grease, and antifreeze. Do
not hose them into the street where they can eventually reach
local streams and lakes.
. Control
soil erosion on your property by planting ground cover and
stabilizing erosion-prone areas.
. Encourage local
government officials to develop construction erosion/sediment
control ordinances in your community.
. Have your
septic system inspected and pumped, at a minimum, every 3-5
years so that it operates properly.
. Purchase
household detergents and cleaners that are low in phosphorous
to reduce the amount of nutrients discharged into our lakes,
streams and coastal waters.

River Quote of the
month |
Song of the French
Broad Written by James
L.
Biebinger
Rising high
within our mountains Descending with a mighty
roar Casting, flickering, dancing shadows O'er its
waters to the shore.
Tis the lovely French Broad
River Whispering of a bygone day Of the Indians in the
forest When no white man knew its way.
If you could
but speak, oh mighty river And would with me your secrets
share Of all the folks who came before me And life upon
a new frontier.
The early settlers have departed The
one that named you now has gone Yet still you cling with
boundless strength To sing your lovely song.
The
passing time has marred your beauty Man has taken
toll And emptied in you much pollution To try the
patience of your soul.
Yet still you have a natural
beauty That man can never take away And your voice will
long be singing After he has passed
away.
