Tour de French Broad
September 6-21, 2006

RiverKeeper Hartwell Carson and Friends
Explore the French Broad River

A hot bowl of chili (courtesy of the French Broad Preservation Association) and a warm welcome in Knoxville, Tenn., was certainly the right way to put the finishing touches on a 219-mile journey down the entire length of the French Broad River. Hartwell Carson, RiverLink’s French Broad Riverkeeper, and Mark Vanderhoff, of Black Dome Mountain Sports, recently completed the 16-day trip.

Carson organized the expedition to raise awareness about the modern challenges facing the French Broad River and all of the tributaries that make up its watershed. The adventure also afforded Carson the opportunity to acquaint himself with the river, meet its residents and monitor its health.

“I felt I had a good understanding of the issues and challenges that are facing our watershed, but to see the impact from development runoff first hand was eye opening,” he said.

One of the biggest problems Carson spoke about, non-point source pollution, comes from erosion at construction sites, pesticides and herbicides, and other seemingly innocuous sources. The team from RiverLink found the river neglected in parts and had an easy time seeing the impact from development throughout Western North Carolina and Eastern Tennessee. Many of the streams that flowed from developed areas ran brown with sediment, while others entered the French Broad clean and cold, just the way most aquatic life depend on.

RiverLinkers on the River
River Cleanup teams from UNC Asheville ACT clean the Swannanoa River!

On an overcast and chilly September day, over 150 UNC-Asheville freshmen picked up trash along the Swannanoa River. The group, part of UNC-A’s ACT (Active Citizenship Together) community service program, covered a 1.5 mile stretch of the river, collected over 200 bags of trash as well as tires, buckets and furniture, contributed a total of 600 hours of service, and had a great time getting to know each other and their watershed!
