The 17-mile Wilma Dykeman Riverway, a continuous greenway linking the French Broad and Swannanoa rivers, just got a big step closer to becoming a reality thanks
to a $500,000 grant to RiverLink from the Janirve Foundation.
The grant will help cover the purchase price of the 5.33-acre EDACO property on Amboy Road. The property has been appraised for more than $1 million, but the
owners have agreed to sell it to RiverLink for $900,000 spread over five years. RiverLink is a non-profit dedicated to the economic and environmental
revitalization of the riverfront. In addition to the Janirve grant, a gift from Shelli and Bradford Stanback and “Deeds of Support” are being used
to buy the EDACO site.
RiverLink is selling one linear foot sections of the RiverWay for $50 to help buy the EDACO property and other “missing links” along the RiverWay.
Those who invest in a linear foot receive a “Deed of Support” certificate.
Because of its history as an auto salvage yard, RiverLink has submitted a formal request that the EDACO site be accepted into the N.C. Brownfields assessment
program.
Using NCDOT enhancement funds, a greenway will be constructed across the EDACO property for pedestrians and bicyclists linking parks on either side. The
remainder of the property will remain fenced until the environmental assessments and any remediation is complete. During the assessment, RiverLink will be
seeking public input into future uses of the site.
RiverLink has been fostering revitalization along the riverfront since its inception in 1986. The Wilma Dykeman RiverWay Plan has been adopted by the Buncombe
County Economic Development Commission, the City of Asheville, Buncombe County, The Coalition of Asheville Neighborhoods, and the NCDOT as “the plan”
for revitalizing Asheville’s riverfront.
The greenway will be a tremendous asset to the city once it’s completed. Thanks to the Janirve Foundation and the Stanbacks for getting us a whole lot
closer to that time.
