The first Earth Day was celebrated on April 22, 1970 to celebrate our Earth and the wonders it provides and to recognize and address the problems facing it. Students are invited to continue this tradition by
exploring the French Broad Watershed through art and writing! RiverLink holds and annual spring contest that coincides with Earth Day!
This program can be combined with a River of Words and Art lesson presented by RiverLink staff.All entries should be submitted to RiverLink. Entries will be judged by local artists, RiverLink staff, volunteers.

Participants are eligble for their artwork to be displayed at various Earth Day events and All Souls, published in RiverLink’s newsletter, Citizen Times magazine, and the French Broad River of Words & Art Calendar.
1 Bookmart Art Winner! This bookmark will be printed out in mass and handed out to RiverLink members and at various RiverLink events.
Winners will receive prizes from RiverLink and sponsors.
All participants will receive a small prize
Guidelines:
Each entry must have the following information on the back to be eligible: Title Name of student
Age and grade level
Teacher ’s name (classroom, art, or homeroom teacher)
School or home address
School or home phone number
Optional: Students are encouraged to include a short description of their work, how they chose their topic, and why they think it is important to learn about the French Broad River.
This contest is open to residents of counties in the French Broad Watershed in North Carolina. (Transylvania, Henderson, Buncombe, Madison, Haywood, Mitchell, Yancey, and Avery counties.)
Ages 3-19, but youth aged 17-19 must still be enrolled in high school.
Each contestant may only enter one time.
All entries must be original work
2D mediums can include crayons, chalk, pencils, paint, ink, markers, photography (at least 8”x10”), collage, computer art.
Poetry and Writing
Writing should not exceed 32 lines.
Writing must either be typed or written in ink and easy to read.
Dimensions:
2D artwork may not exceed 11”x17” and be hangable.
Sculpture may not exceed 1 1/2 ' cubed and must be free standing (Mobiles are also accepted!)
New Category! Bookmark Art should reflect aspects of river stewardship and will be shrunk to 7"x 2 3/4"
