Drought forum attendees explain why drought is an important issue to them:

"For humans necessity is the mother of invention. The drought has awakened us. We should practice water management even in times of abundance. I want to help."

"I want to learn more about this drought to take part in finding solutions. We should identify changes that individuals can make to raise regional groundwater levels and water storage (analogous to changing lightbulbs for energy efficiency!), and get the word out!"

"I moved to Asheville from northern Arizona. Water was a huge issue there. this is a continued interest of mine."

"I work at the Water Treatment Plant in Mills River, for the City of Hendersonville. This is a serious concern for our future."

"I'm a staff writer for a Cocke County, Tenn., newspaper. In addition, I recieved an B.S. in Agricultural Science with a communications option."

"It's a crucial issue for my life as a marketing manager for a rafting company that is dependent of decisions and projections made by power companies and government agencies so that I can make money and live my life.
It's also important to me as a kayaker and as a citizen of our earth to keep an eye on these conditions."

"So, this is a good opportunity to learn about the drought and associated best management practices and visit with other RiverLink members. Plus, we are in the process of building a new "green" zero energy use home in Marshall and want to see how to best incorporate water saving technologies into our home..."

"Interested in learning more about drought and recommendations to make to landowners on how to mitigate impacts."

"Our current drought is not an isolated event. We need to prepare for more of the same.
Our land development policies must recognize that our water resources are limited."

"The drought is an important issue in WNC. Climate change probably means more severe droughts."

"Drought is an important issue in WNC especially in light of expected growth."

"Education is a very important tool, and as our conditions here in WNC change I believe it is our responsibility to become informed. When we have knowledge we can then formulate plans which leads to taking action in addressing our environmental issues."

"As a gardener I am extremely interested in having as much water available as possible. as a homeowner I am concerned about the condition of my lawn and flower beds. I want to make sure that there is enough water for industry, futher development and recreational needs. when I moved to Buncombe County in 1980, everyone was talking about needing a sufficient water supply. we seem to be talking about it still with not a great deal being done to address the issue."

"I am a master gardener volunteer and our mission is to educate and facilitate conservation practices"

"More education on what we can do in a drought situation will help me in my volunteer job advising the public. The more I know the more I can get the word out to others."

"I'm very concerned about the surge in development and the resulting impact on our resources, which are already stressed. Then add drought, global warming, the effects of poor land and water management, etc. to the mix."

"I am extremely concerned about the future availability of sufficient supplies of clean, easily accessible water. It is going to be one of the most important issues that we face in the near future."

"Water resources and shortages and pollution of those resources will be one of the most serious concerns in the near future. As a member of Sustainable Asheville, I want to be be well informed on water resources and water quality issues."
